Researchers at the Mexican National Institute of Technology spent three years developing a biofertilizer that can increase crop yields, improve soil, and improve the ecological environment.
According to the scientists of the Institute of Comprehensive Development of the Institute of Science and Technology, this biological fertilizer is a natural fertilizer with an endogenous mycorrhizal plant as its main raw material. This plant can absorb phosphorus and other nutrients in the soil and increase soil fertility.
The director of the research, Ignacio Maldonado, said that their experiments in Sinaloa, an important tomato producing area in northern Mexico, have yielded satisfactory results. He said that this kind of bio-fertilizer has effectively improved the soil quality, increased the yield of tomatoes, and at the same time avoided the pollution caused by the indiscriminate application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to the ecological environment.
Maldonado also stated that they will establish a seed bank of endogenous mycorrhizal plants to study the genetic traits of this plant's parent and offspring, in order to use this biological fertilizer in the future to improve fertilizer-contaminated farmland soil. He said that they will further explore biological fertilizers suitable for the growth of other crops.
To date, Mexican researchers have used nitrogen-fixing technology to develop a non-polluting biological fertilizer that is suitable for crops such as corn, sorghum, wheat, and onions, and has already put into production.
