Introduction In the printing process, the production and processing of electronic images and the transmission of electronic data have had a tremendous impact on the printing and publishing industry. Currently in the industry, various electronic information needs to be exchanged during the design and imposition process. Moreover, the electronic data transmission between the prepress and printing departments is becoming more and more common, driven by the competitive pressure of faster printing cycle. The printing elements involved in the printing and publishing industry are, in addition to the special computer software used, some simple pages and page elements.
The DDAP Association, the CGATS Sixth Subcommittee (an ANSI organization) and the ISO Technical Committee 130 (Image Technology) have been working hard to establish a common standard format for printing processes. SWOP also strongly encourages the use of various standards in all areas, but at the same time realizes that it is sometimes impossible to achieve under current conditions.
Exchange of electronic documents Exchange of electronic document data can be passed directly or via a physically removable medium as a carrier for file transfer. There are many options in this area, and many changes will occur in the coming years. However, if data is to be delivered in a standard format, the first consideration should be cost, time, and device compatibility issues. Similarly, there is a good choice between the recipient and the sender. In this regard, SWOP did not provide a choice of direct transmission and transmission through the media, but pointed out in particular: the use of these two methods to exchange "business" data and advertising-related proofs need to be prepared in advance.
The process of generating, processing, and transferring electronic images of responsibility is very important. Improper handling will affect the quality of images. In the traditional production process, there are many opportunities for visual inspection of proofs and films to find out the mistakes. Therefore, the same confirmation step must also be included in the all-electronic workflow.
Only when all the participants in the workflow are fully communicating with each electronic file, can it become an efficient all-digital workflow. To avoid potential problems, the SWOP Committee recommends that the following requirements be met in any electronic prepress production scenario. They are generally found in standard systems and are not included in informal or non-standard systems.
1. The first requirement is in the field of job data transmission. Any electronic data transmission process must have a list of electronic operating requirements, such as the GCA's published prepress data exchange requirements. The schedule should not only contain information on job management (printing time and location, etc.), but also include the determination of the format of the electronic data used and other relevant information.
2. The second requirement is to use the exchange of SWOP proofs as a feedback loop to avoid changes in data and information in the transmission process and to detect the quality of the image. Colors often change between devices, unless the color management system is full-featured, full-scale, and relevant personnel have adopted standard ICC profiles (based on ANSI/CGATS TR 001 color profile data). Publishers should also look at the final TIFF/IT file or PDF file to ensure the integrity of the file.
Data Architecture There are two different data architectures in the printing technology industry: Color Prepress System (CEPS) and Desktop Publishing (DTP). Although these two architectures are based on different principles, they are widely used in the production process.
There are currently many file format types (such as text, vector, raster, etc.). The CEPS platform exclusively uses raster formats - pictures, text, and line art are all represented in different raster formats. The raster method provides predictability in direct digital color proofing (DDCP) systems, imposition and platemaking systems. (To be continued)
