Coca-Cola announced today that its innovative PlantBotTLeTM-packed beverages will be launched in select markets around the world, launching the company's goal of producing 2 billion special polyester plastic bottles by the end of 2010.

PlantBottle Polyester plastic bottles are partially made of plants, reducing the company’s reliance on oil as a non-renewable resource. In addition, this material can be 100% recycled, and preliminary studies have shown that PlantBottle packaging produces a smaller carbon footprint than plastic bottles made from traditional polyester, from the planting of plant materials to the production of resins.

Mok Tai Kang, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, said: “Today, Coca-Cola took the lead in using some recyclable polyester bottles made of plants in the market, which is an important step in our journey towards sustainable packaging. From Coca-Cola brand in Copenhagen to Dasani water in the western United States, we have begun to promote the first generation of bottle packaging that represents the future trend."

In Denmark, 500 ml and 2 litres of Coca-Cola, Diet Coca-Cola and Sugar-Free Coca-Cola now have PlantBottle packaging. PlantBottle-packaged Coca-Cola, Sprite, FreSCa and Dasani waters will be available in western Canada in December and will supply the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. In selected markets in the western United States, such as Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, several sizes of bubble beverage brands and Dasani Water will be packaged in PlantBottle from January next year. The company also plans to launch the package in other markets in the future, including Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

The PlantBottle sample will be presented at the "A Growing World of Refreshment, a 2020 VISion" investor event in Atlanta later today.

Kate Krebs, Climate Group's director of sustainable resources, said: "The PlantBottle innovation is a good example of how companies can help combat climate change and reduce pressure on our precious natural resources. Although Coca-Cola has just begun using plant-based polyester plastics, As a packaging material, this transformative solution has the potential to generate significant long-term benefits."

Currently, the PlantBottle packaging is made by converting sugar cane and sugar syrup, a by-product of sugar production, into a key component of polyester plastics. The sugarcane used in production is mainly from dryland production areas and was used to produce ethanol instead of refined sugar. The company's ultimate goal is to use non-food plant-based waste such as sawdust or wheat straw to produce recycled polyester plastic bottles.

Dr. Jason Clay, Senior Vice President of Market Transformation Program at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said: "Coca-Cola is currently acquiring raw materials for PlantBottle from suppliers in Brazil. After being recognized by a third party, Brazil is pursuing the industry's best agricultural practice standards. For companies like Coca-Cola, it is important to conserve natural resources through sustainable agriculture when seeking ways to mitigate environmental problems."

Although the proportion of bio-based ingredients in Polyester plastics packaged in PlantBottle can be as high as 30%, the actual ratio will vary due to the fact that plastic bottles also contain recycled polyester. For example, Denmark uses recycled materials in its PlantBottle packaging. The total of plant-based and recycled materials can account for 65% of the material, of which 50% comes from recycled materials and 15% comes from plant-based materials.

In PlantBottle packaging in the United States and Canada, the content of plant-based substances in polyester plastics can be as high as 30%.

Scott Vitters, Coca-Cola's director of sustainable packaging, said: "While the introduction and launch of PlantBottle put Coca-Cola at the forefront of bio-based packaging innovation, we will continue to work harder to create better bottles. Our desire is to continue implementation. Innovate to produce 100% bottles that are made from plant waste materials and are fully recyclable."
