Overseas binding is not reliable

I have five American original editions of E.B. White, all of which are paperback books published in New York: three fairy tales including "The Network of Charlotte" and a booklet called "The Essentials of Stylistics". There is a thicker selection of White Prose.

Among them, in addition to the "elements of stylistics", the other four are rubber books published by Harper Collins, New York, and have been with me for five years. What is their "physical condition" now? Please listen to my diagnosis:

The three fairy tales such as "The Network of Charlotte" are only about 200 pages long, but their first few pages and the last few pages have been opened. The spine also has the danger of cracking.

With 364 pages of "White Prose", the situation is even worse. Once, when I was reading, I suddenly heard a bang and the book broke completely from page 2I6 into two volumes. At that time, I just read less than half a month.

Fortunately, these four books use the kind of thin paper that can be filled with creamy white glue and will not be opened again in a short time.

As for the "Elements of Stylistics", although it was less than a hundred pages, because it used saddle-stitched binding technology, the last few pages of the book had been removed, and the nails had rusted, leaving shocking rust.

Let's take a look at the quality of English books. Once, the domestic friends gave me a novel in the UK published Le Carre, it is a glue book. After I got the book, I just turned it a few times and heard a "click" sound. It broke completely from the middle, and it literally turned into two volumes.

However, my other book “Forgotten Kingdom” written by John Murray in London in 1957, even though friends were sent from abroad and went through thousands of miles, I have seen it several times. The page is always intact because it uses the sewing technique.

Domestic book binding

The books I have are relatively new. I can only speak from the 1920s. In order to save space, only one book is selected from each decade as a representative.

For books published in the 21st century in the country, because the year is too close to buying too little, it is not easy to make personal conclusions. With impressions, books made by sewing lines, the quality of bookbinding has no problem. Saddle stitching and flat-booking books, if they are less than 300 pages, will not be open for a moment, and it will be difficult to say a few years later.

Under normal circumstances, I think that if a wireless glue book with a number of pages below 300 pages does not experience a strong external force (such as dropping from the air), it will not be paged or cracked within five years. As for the plastic book with 300 pages or more, the smaller the size of the paper, the thicker the paper, the more the page number is more likely to leave the page and crack. The book with more than 500 pages will sometimes crack, and it will be more than a scratch. It's easy.

Saddle stitching or flat stitching, regardless of thickness, generally does not cause page breaks or cracks. However, the book pages at the mouth of the book are easy to sever, and the pages at the end of the book can easily be separated from one another. Over time, such as poor storage, nails are easy to embroider.

Bookbinding books, regardless of thickness, the quality of the binding can be guaranteed. The finer the binding, the longer the shelf life, and some books will not be paged even when the pages become damaged. The shelf life can be at least 70 years.

Therefore, as a reader, I will always welcome sewing orders. For books with more than 300 pages, I would like to give up the show: I would rather have a flat book with more than 300 pages instead of 300-page bookbinding. Book unless there is no choice.
